The textile tradition of the Alpujarra is one of its most recognized hallmarks, and the jarapas, its colorful artisanal fabrics, are the best reflection of this. Of Andalusian origin, jarapas were born as a practical and sustainable way to take advantage of used garments, and over time they became indispensable decorative elements in Alpujarra houses.
Today, this ancestral craft is still alive thanks to the traditional looms spread throughout towns such as Bubión, Pampaneira and Capileira. Many of them open their doors to visitors, offering not only the possibility of seeing the old manual looms in action, but also of participating in workshops where the complete process is taught: from the preparation of the yarn to the weaving of the final design.
Participating in a jarapa workshop is a perfect way to connect with the soul of the Alpujarra, learn a traditional trade first-hand and take home a unique souvenir made by you. It is ideal for families with children, curious travellers or anyone interested in sustainability, crafts and experiential tourism.
